Abstract

Introduction: Urinary lithiasis is characterized by a high rate of recurrence and high economic costs. Its composition in the Cuban pediatric population is unknown.

Objective: Identify the composition of urolithiasis in Cuban pediatric patients according to age and sex.

Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample included Cuban patients under the age of 19 who underwent studies of urolithiasis composition by infrared spectroscopy at the Renal Physiopathology Laboratory of "Dr. Abelardo Buch López" Institute of Nephrology from January 2010 to January 2020. The data were obtained from the Lithiasis Composition Report. The information was processed in an automated manner (SPSS22.0). Frequency distribution analyses and the homogeneity test were used.

Results: 131 patients with a male/female ratio of 1.38/1 were studied and 99 of them (75.6%) were teenagers. Calcium oxalate lithiasis accounted for 71.8%, followed by calcium oxalate plus uric acid (8.4%), calcium carbonate and struvite (both 5.3%), and calcium oxalate plus calcium phosphate and uric acid (both 3.1%). In terms of age and sex, differences in the composition of lithiasis were not statistically significant.

Conclusions: The most common urolithiasis in Cuban children and adolescents are, in this order, those of calcium oxalate, calcium oxalate plus uric acid, calcium carbonate and struvite. There are no differences in the composition of lithiasis depending on the patients´age and sex.
