Intestinal obstruction due to metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the duodenum and the jejunum

Renal cell carcinoma currently represents 2%-3% of all cancers. Characterized as it is by its metastatic potential, it does not often affect the duodenum and the jejunum. A case is presented of a female 63-year-old patient with a history of left renal cell carcinoma treated by radical nephrectomy. Five years after the diagnosis, the patient reports a progressive sensation of fullness and satiety which has worsened with the passing of time until she attends the emergency service with a state suggestive of intestinal obstruction. Abdominal tomography reveals the presence of obstruction secondary to edema of the duodenal and jejunal submucosa. Duodenal biopsy is indicated, which confirms metastatic infiltration by the aforementioned renal tumor. Although metastatic damage to the small intestine by renal cell carcinoma is infrequent, it is a diagnosis to be considered in patients with symptoms of intestinal obstruction and a tumor history.
