Sclerotherapy with absolute alcohol of the tunica vaginalis hydrocele

Abstract

  

Introduction: Sclerotherapy has been gaining wider acceptance for the treatment of Hydrocele instead of surgery. Objective: To evaluate the success rates of Sclerotherapy of tunica vaginalis for the treatment of idiopathic Hydrocele with alcohol 99,5 %. Methods: We have studied 15 patients with idiopathic hydrocele in different sizes from September 2011 to January 2012. These Patients had their hydrocele drained and were instilled with the equivalent of 10 % of the drained liquid, in 99.5 % absolute alcohol. The average follow-up time was 3 months. Results: 87 % of patients had no recurrence of Hydrocele with the first instillation, two patients with hydrocele of greater volume needed a second instillation of 99, 5 % absolute alcohol, and they had a new recurrence and were treated with open surgery. Conclusions: Sclerotherapy of hydrocele with absolute alcohol is a reliable alternative for surgery.
